Most people are
now proud to show their African heritage, and wearing
dreads is one of the best ways to appear all-African.
-
Contrary to all
other hairstyles, dreadlocks are a very low maintenance
hairstyle.

While hair treatment
can cause irrepairable damage to hair, dreadlocks
can be worn for as long as one wants, without suffering
any breakages or discolouring - if well taken care

| TAKING
GOOD CARE OF YOUR DREADLOCKS |
|
|
|
Anytime you feel that your dreads
need to be washed, just wash them. If you've just
done your dreads for the first time, try to not
wash for at least a week to give them some time
to dry out a bit. After that you don't have anything
to worry about when you wash - you can always rewax
the loose pieces back into the main dreads. And
in fact, washing them actually helps them develop
faster, as it's removing the natural oils from your
hair that cause those new knots to slip out!
When you wash, give your scalp
a really good scrub with a dreadlock shampoo (e.g
Knotty Boy Dread Shampoo or DdreadHead Shampoo).
Don't use regular shampoos from the drug store or
salons - they contain conditioners and other chemicals
that soften and detangle hair, not knot it up! And
don't worry about washing the dreads themselves,
the soap that runs down from your scalp will clean
them just fine and you don't really want to mess
with them too much anyway. Just keeping your scalp
healthy is the super important part.
And here's a little tip for drying
your dreads after you shower: if they're new dreads,
carefully squeeze them dry with a towel. And be
sure to get your dreads completely dry every time
you get them wet or wash them - this is very important!
If you swim or wash them a lot (more than once a
week usually), your dreads can start smelling very
funky and musty if you do not dry them out properly
in the sun, with a blowdryer, etc. Mold can actually
grow inside your locks if you leave them damp most
of the time!
Just always remember to keep your
dreads as clean as possible. If you work at a job
like dishwashing or with other smelly things, wear
a hat to keep the smells out. If you're camping
in the woods or sleeping outside, always make sure
you wear a hat then, too, so no dirt or bugs get
trapped in there. Just use salt water in a spray
bottle, because it helps to dry them up and tighten
them up a bit better.
And on that note of tightening
dreadlocks naturally , after a few weeks of starting
your locks and you notice they're beginning to come
together a little more each day, picking up a jar
of Organics Root Stimulator LOCKS & TWISTS GEL
(Available at Shear Illusions), is a great way to
get them tighter, faster, without the use of harsh
and damaging salts.

Night
Time Braid Maintenance -
The way you take care
of your braids before you go to bed makes
the difference between them looking perfect
and being a fuzzy mess.
- Wear a silk or satin
scarf every night to keep your braids
frizz free and smooth.
- Sleep on a silk or
satin pillowcase in case the scarf falls
off.
General Braid
Care Tips
- Make sure your braider
doesn’t put your braids in tightly.
It doesn’t make them last any
longer and it pulls your hair out.
- Don’t ever leave
your braids in for more than 12 weeks.
Every 6-8 weeks is the best time to
take them out and have them re-done.
- Wash your braids once
every 1-2 weeks with diluted shampoo.
Focus on your scalp, letting the suds
travel down to the ends of the braids.
- Don’t use creamy
conditioners with braids. They cause
build up in the hair that makes knots
form at the base of the braids.
- After you shampoo and
apply leave-in conditioner, make sure
your braids dry completely. This prevents
damage to your hair from mildew.
- If the braids around
your edges get loose, take them out
and re-do them. Loose braids weaken
your hairline and cause it to fade.
- Always deep condition
your hair between braiding. If you don’t
the end results will be damage, breakage
and thinning.
- Trim the ends of your
hair a little bit after you take your
braids out, before the next set goes
in.
